Reflection on Matthew 24:36-44

Scripture
“You must also be ready all the time for the Son of Man will come when least expected.”

Observation
Nobody knows the time when Jesus will return. People speculate as they have done through the ages, but no one really knows. Even Jesus didn't know.

We can say that Jesus' return will be sudden . Just as in Noah's day, when people lived “life as normal” right until the flood came, so life will be the usual round of weddings, parties and feasts right up to the end.

The people of God, however, must keep watch and be ready all the time.

Application
What do I need to do to be ready?

Firstly I need to be constantly looking to Jesus, seeking His direction for my daily life and long term goals.

Secondly I need to be in constant relationship with Him. It's too east to get lost in the details of daily life, but our focus has to be on Jesus and the Kingdom in the midst of daily life.

Thirdly this is all about the state of our hearts, and not about gathering information about the end-times. If your heart is prepared to meet Jesus it won't matter when He comes.

Prayer
Lord, help me to set my whole life on following you. Let me be found ready today and every day. Amen.
