Reflection on Isaiah 11:1-10

Scripture
Out of the stump of David's family will grow a shoot- yes a new Branch bearing fruit from the old root.

Observation
The stump, the remnant of Israel, will produce a shoot far greater, more significant than anything before.

This shoot is Jesus and the Spirit of God rests on him.

He is both meek and powerful, gentle to the hurting and able to shake the world with a word.

His arrival brings in the new age when the whole of creation is restored- animals get on together and there is no hurt or destruction any more.

He will be a banner, a rallying point for the nations.

Application
The arrival of Jesus changes everything. He sets the prisoner free from bondage to religion. He overturns unjust governmental systems. He rebukes the wicked and elevates the poor.

And yet...

We see the story half-completed. Hurt, death and poisonous snakes remain. Brutal and unjust governments continue.

But one day...

Come Lord Jesus, come.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, you are more than a little baby in a cute stable scene. You have the power to defeat all evil. As your follower I decide today to stand for righteousness in all I do. Amen.
