Reflection on Luke 21:5-19

Scripture
“By standing firm you will win your souls.”

Observation
The majestic Temple seemed to be a symbol of permanence. But Jesus says that the Temple will soon be completely destroyed.

He goes on to tell talk about false Messiahs, was, earthquakes and famines.

Worse than this, the disciples themselves will face persecution for their loyalty to Jesus. But this in fact will be an opportunity to tell others about Jesus and He will give them the words to speak.

Application
This is not an end-times scenario as Jesus says, “the end will not follow immediately.” Rather, he is preparing his followers for the reality that following Jesus means conflict and separation from family members who do not believe.

Persecution of christian disciples has happened through the ages and still continues today. In many places it is unsafe to be a follower of Jesus.

For these disciples Jesus still says, “By standing firm you will win your souls.”

Prayer
Lord Jesus today I pray for those of your disciples facing violence or imprisonment for your sake. May they know your presence, your peace, your comfort. Amen.
