Reflection on Luke 5:1-11

Scripture
As soon as they landed, they left everything and followed Jesus.

Observation
Jesus sees an empty boat and decides it will be a good platform from which to teach the crowds.

After he is finished, he instructs Peter to push the boat into the deeper water, where they haul in a huge catch of fish.

Peter is awe-struck by the miracle.

They return to the land, and Peter, James and John leave their fishing business to follow Jesus.

Application
Faith is risky. Faith leads us to see something that others cannot see.

While fleshly people put their trust in business, career, money or other tghigs, the people of faith look to the security that God brings.

Faith is the way of adventure. We have to leave the comfort and predictability of home in order to discover the destiny that God has for us.

James, Peter and John left their successful fishing business to follow a rabbi. They saw in this miracle not so much power but a sign of the reality of God's reign in their midst. They wanted that so much that they left everything for it.

Prayer
Father, what are you calling me to leave behind today? Help me yo see my life as you see it and to let go of the things that prevent me from following you. Amen.

  1. Letting go is something I've been focusing on lately too. Kind of hard after a lifetime of hanging on, but with God's help anything is possible.

  2. I spend half my life telling people to let go and the other half telling people to hang on! We have to let go of everything that is not God and hang on tenaciously to Him.
