Reflection on Luke 13:31-35

Scripture
“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones God's messengers! How often I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks under her wings, but you wouldn't let me.”

Observation
Pharisees come to Jesus and warn him that Herod is out to get him. It seems odd that the Pharisees as a group would do this- perhaps it was one or two secret supporters of Jesus, or perhaps a plot to scare him into staying away from the city.

Jesus must go to Jerusalem to complete his calling. For now he will heal the sick and cast out demons, but on the third day, at the appointed time, Jesus will accomplish his purposes in Jerusalem.

Application
God has a tender love for His people even when they reject His purposes. He wanted to redeem Jerusalem- the city more responsible for killing His prophets than any other- yet they spurned His love. They said to God, “We don't need you” and rejected His love.

Often we are just the same. We want to stand on our own two feet, independently of God, doing it all our own way. Of course it all falls apart and eventually we have to turn to God, receive His love and move on, perhaps a little wiser.

Prayer
Lord you surround me with your love every day. My heart tends to ignore you or even reject you. Please help me to respond to oyur love and to grow in you each day. Amen.
