Scripture
“Repent of your sins and turn to God for the Kingdom of heaven is near.”
Observation
John appears in the wilderness and starts preaching the simple gospel: “Repent of your sins and turn to God for the Kingdom of heaven is near.”
John was the one of whom Isaiah prophesied about preparing the way for the Lord's coming.
Everyone went to hear him. He has no seeker-friendly services. He simply exhorted people to turn to God. Those who did this were baptised.
The religious leaders he denounced and warned them that they had the same need to repent.
But his real message was that Jesus was coming. He would be much greater than John and would bring a baptism of Holy Spirit and of fire.
Application
God's kingdom is right here- it's all around us if we will only see it. God is reigning and our responsibility is to turn away from our comfortable sins and turn to Him.
The problem is that most of us don't want to change that much. We will repent enough to gain God's forgiveness but not enough to walk in His presence.
Repent- daily, continually.
Prayer
Lord reveal the true state of my soul. Show me the things that I need to turn from in order to live in your presence. Amen.
