Reflection on Matthew 2:13-23

Scripture
A cry was heard from Ramah- weeping and great mourning. Rachel weeps for her children, refusing to be comforted for they are dead.

Observation
After the wise men leave, Joseph again has a dream in which an angel warns him to fell because Herod is going to try to kill the baby.

They immediately flee to Egypt. Herd orders the killing of all the boys two years and younger in the Bethlehem region.

Some time later they hear that Herod has died and so they return to Israel and settle in Nazareth in Galilee.

Application
How ferociously the evil forces of satan try to stamp out the baby Jesus.

One of the signs of evil is that the lives of individuals are not considered to be of any account. People are tortured and killed with impunity. They are devalued and dehumanised.

We see this in the political machinations surrounding refugees. People flee from Asia because of policies of repression. They might find their way to Australia where they are denigrated and refused entry, becoming political pawns.

Prayer
Lord Jesus you were nce a refugee from the forces of evil. You were rejected and ultimately killed for our sake. Help me Lord to see our current refugees in the light of your experience. Amen.
