Reflection on Matthew 1:18-25

Scripture
“And she will have a son and you are to name him Jesus for he will save his people from their sins.”

Observation
Mary, a virgin betrothed to Joseph, becomes pregnant through the Holy Spirit.

What must it have been like for her- the shame, the uncertainty, the gossip, the excitement.

What must it have been like for Joseph- a simple faithful man believing his fiancée had been sleeping around?

An angel appears to Joseph in a dream with a fantastic message that this baby was conceived under the power of the Holy Spirit and he would be the promised Saviour.

Application
What qualifications did Mary and Joseph have to carry out this awesome responsibility of carrying and raising the Son of God?

They were just ordinary people seemingly devoted to serving God.

Their calling was extreme but not total happiness. There must have been hostility from some. They had to flee to another country. Then there was the yea on year drudgery of ordinary living.

God is still looking for people whose only qualification is that they say “Yes” when He calls- and then stay the course regardless of the apparent outcomes.

Prayer
Lord I know that you have a plan for my life. Help me to surrender all that am into your hands. Amen.
