Scripture
From then on Jesus began to preach, “Repent of your sins and turn to God for the kingdom of heaven is near.”
Observation
When Jesus hears of the arrest of John, he returns to Nazareth and from there goes to Capernaum.
He begins to preach the message of repentance and the Kingdom.
One day he sees Simon Peter, Andrew, James and John, and he calls them, “Come and follow me and I will show you how to fish for people.”
They immediately follow, leaving their fishing business behind.
Application
Following Jesus is a risky business. These men had no idea what they were getting into.
They heard the call of Jesus and left everything behind to follow that call.
When we first start to follow Jesus we embark on a journey that has no clear destination. We don't know the extent of the journey we must take, nor do we know what needs to be left behind.
We don't seek a destination so much as a journey with a guide. The journey has easy parts and hard parts, places where the road is easy to follow and places where it is an overgrown track.
Regardless of what part of the journey we are on, Jesus always walks with us, directing our path and ensuring that we don't fall over any hidden cliffs.
Prayer
Lord show me your way. Help me to walk on the paths you set for me. Show me anything that I need to leave behind in order to follow you. Amen.
Amen!
