Reflection on Isaiah 9:1-5

Scripture
The people who walk in darkness will see a great light, for those who live in a land of deep darkness a light will shine.

Observation
Isaiah sees a time of darkness and despair but this will be limited. Judgement will give way to blessing.

A light will appear in the darkness and Israel will be enlarged.

People will rejoice as at harvest time for God will break off the yoke of slavery and the land will again be free.

Application
Light and darkness are grand themes in Scripture. Light is associated with truth and knowledge of God. Darkness is associated with ignorance of God, judgement and despair.

How we react to the presence of God in our life shows the state of our heart. Some people actually prefer the darkness, and when God's word is heard they flee. Others love the light of God's presence and even when it seems hurtful they know it brings healing and life.

Prayer
Lord the sinful part of me fears the light of your presence, yet the redeemed part of me welcomes you. Help me, Lord, to turn to you even when sin seems to be getting the upper hand. Amen.
