In this commentary on unemployment benefits this brilliant statement emerged:
Ms O'Halloran said that while politicians and others were enjoying a well-earned break, for Australians on the unemployment benefit there would be no hope of a holiday. In the survey, 86 per cent of respondents said they would cancel holiday plans if forced to live on $234.
I'm in favour of giving unemployed people a reasonable benefit, but let's not think that a holiday from a rest is a necessity.
Yes, I've heard similiar comments here and it always makes me wonder if there is a gentle way to make that same statement to them. If the holiday is Christmas and there are children, then maybe they could be helped, but it it's just a vacation - well, I went 3 years without a vacation and i work 12 hour days, at least 6 days a week. I'm still alive, and working!
ReplyDeleteHoliday here means what vacation means to you.Yep I think if I was earning very little I would cancel holiday plans- abandon all luxuries.
