Reflection on Acts 10:34-48

Scripture
“He is the one all the prophets testified about, saying that everyone who believes in him will have their sins forgiven.”

Observation
This passage is Peter's account of what happened that brought him to the house of Cornelius, a Gentile.

Peter has come to the reluctant conclusion that God shows no favouritism to Jews as against the Gentiles.

The Good News is that through Jesus there is peace with God. Sinful men put Him to death on the cross, but God raised Him up.

As Peter is explaining these things there is an outpouring of the Holy Spirit, and the people start praising God and speaking in tongues. As they have clearly received the Holy Spirit, Peter orders them to be baptised.

Application
Jesus is for all people regardless of race, social status or any other factor. God's kingdom is open to everybody.

The Holy Spirit is available to all who put their trust in Jesus. The baptism in the Holy Spirit should be a normal part of the conversion experience. If you love Jesus you should receive the Holy Spirit with all the gifts of the Spirit.

Part of the reason why this is so uncommon is that we don't yield ourselves fully to God at conversion. Following Jesus is total surrender not just taking on board a new philosophy.

Prayer
Come Holy Spirit, fill me like you filled the people in Cornelius' household. Let my tongue be filled with your praise and my heart with your joy. Amen.
