Scripture
And a voice from heaven said, “This is my dearly loved Son who brings me great joy.”
Observation
Jess goes to be baptised by John. John tries to talk him out of it, but Jesus insists that it is necessary to do all of God's will.
As Jesus comes out of the water, the Holy Spirit descends on Him in the form of a dove and a voice from heaven declares, “This is my dearly loved Son who brings me great joy.”
Application
The Holy Spirit comes on Jesus at the moment of His baptism. This should be the norm for Christians that water baptism and Spirit baptism coincide.
Of course it isn't the outward action that brings the Spirit and the commendation of the Father. It is the state of heart that says, “We must carry out all that God requires.”
There can be endless debate about why Jesus needed to be baptised- indeed why anyone needs to be baptised. However, the heart that says “I must do all that God requires” is the heart that [pleases God.
Prayer
Father grant me the grace to do all that you require, not just the things that are comfortable or pleasing to me. Amen.
Womderful words!
