Reflection on Jeremiah 8:18-9:1

Scripture
My grief is beyond healing; my heart is broken.

Observation
Jeremiah sees the desolation and destruction that is about to fall on his people and he is heart-broken. He shares the grief of his people and their sense of lostness.

The grief he feels is so deep that that he wishes his head was a pool of water and his eyes a fountain of tears in order to express the grief he feels.

Application
Sometimes life is so full of suffering that here are no words that can express our grief, no daylight to offer hope in what seems like a never-ending darkness.

Later Jeremiah will express words of hope- a future in which the Lord is with his people again. But for now he just feels this massive load of grief.

Jeremiah is not a prophet of doom relishing the coming vengeance of the Lord. He is a man of deep passion both for God and His people.

This is the true Biblical prophet.

Prayer
Father I pray for those who today are going through great darkness, for whom life is a burden. Please walk beside them and comfort them today. Amen.
