This time of the year, a plant grows over all the creeks and rivers here. I haven't found out what it is called- my more knowledgeable friends will be able to help here. ...

Each plant is perhaps a centimetre or two across and consists of tiny leaves. Underneath there is a small root system that pulls nutrients out of the water. The leaves vary in colour- at the moment they are quite green, but in the colder months they may be more red in colour.
This year's crop is particularly thick. It sits on top of the water like a heavy blanket. Small birds are actually able to walk across the top of it. As Joshua discovered when he was 2 years old, people cannot walk on it :)
As the weather warms up the plants will die off and the water will return to its normal state. At the moment, however, in our creek it is very hard to see where the water is as it is completely covered in this weed.
