Reflection on 1 Timothy 6:6-19

Scripture
Godliness with contentment is great gain.

Observation
Paul is realistic about the power of greed in our hearts. It is better to be conten with what we have than to pursue riches.

It is not money that is the problem but the love of money. It can stir up all kinds of foolish desires in our hearts and lead us away from the faith.

Christians are to flee from all of this and instead pursue righteousness and godliness with all our heart. We should be like Jesus who made a good confession even while testifying before Pilate.

Those who are rich must not trust in their wealth. Rather they must put their hope in God and use their wealth to lay up true treasure in heaven.

Application
The faithful use of wealth and possessions is a challenge for christians. We are not to use our stuff merely for our own pleasure but rather always be seeking to do the work of the Kingdom through our riches. We must never become too dependent on our money. All true security comes from God alone.

If we have money, let us rejoice in God's provision, but let us never allow it to take a place of affection in our hearts that is greater than God's place.

Prayer
Father you bless us with so many good things. May I be found faithful and generous with my money, my possessions and my home. Amen.
