Normally the river is less than a quarter of the width it is now and sort of strolls through town rather than flowing. Judging by the debris on the surface it's travelling about 20-30 km/hr, and I guess parts of the current would be even faster. To add confusion this isn't actually the mighty Namoi River but the Narrabri Creek which is an anabranch of the river. The creek splits off a few km south of town and they rejoin a few km north. The actual river is usually dry these days, except in floods such as this one. Yesterday when I looked there was a respectable flow going through the river. And everything is so green!
Thanks Elande. The river is back to its normal depth now and well inside its banks. If I think about it in the next day or so I will go and take some shots for comparison.
It certainly changes the view of a river. Great shots!

ReplyDeleteReminds me of some of my hurricane pictures. I would be as close to the bank as I could, if not in the water with the camera. Great shots.
