Big Day in the Garden

Monday seems to be the day of the week that I can most often spend some quality time in the garden.

Despite the threat of rain all day, I managed to get the mowing done which always feels like a great achievement.

Today, I was not able to get to the veggie patch except to notice that it all seems healthy and happy.

The peas are going on longer than normal, possibly because of the cool spring. This year I planted a dwarf variety and was quite happy to see that the yield is pretty much the same as I normally get from the sort that need to be staked up. There are flowers coming again so there may yet be more peas in a few weeks.

Here is a red variety of lettuce. Because of the warm climate here, most lettuce varieties go to seed too soon from spring onwards. I'm hoping this little guy will produce the leaves.

Ever since I was a little boy I have loved beetroot. Freshly grown and home cooked beetroot tastes a million times better than the tinned stuff. I love the contrasting colours in the leaves of these plants with the red veins running through the leaves.

Home grown tomatoes are the best, and I'm looking forward to summer when I will be harvesting dozens of them!
