It is the middle of the whale migration season right now and whales are actually travelling up and down the coast n both directions. The earlier ones are now on their way south having been up to the tropics to breed, while those slower are still heading north.
The people who disembarked from the boat prior to us told us how the whales had swum right up to the boat and leapt out of the water right before their eyes.
So with great anticipation we boarded the vessel, donned our life jackets and headed out to the ocean. We pulled up at the location indicated by "spotters". "the whales are here" we were told. Indeed, the presence of several boats gathered around in a circle about a kilometre in diameter indicated that something was there.
We waited a while but there was no activity.
A pod of dolphins raced about half a kilometre away from us, but no whales could be seen.
We headed off in another direction, where a smaller boat had seen some. as we sped along someone yelled "Off to the left". The boat pulled up and two juvenile whales could be seen swimming rather lethargically through the waves.
After a while they disappeared and failed to re-emerge. But we had seen our guaranteed whales, and had spent an extra 1/2 hour at sea over what we were promised so it was a quick dash back to the wharf where the next batch of passengers were waiting to board for a cruise up the river.
Here are some fish swimming around the wharf waiting for food

Although it felt a long way out, land was always in sight.

at last! Some whales!
