But the jar he was making did not turn out as he had hoped so he crushed it into a lump of clay again and started over.
Observation
The Lord has Jeremiah go to a potter's workshop where He shows him the potter working.
The Lord's message is that He is the potter, just as the potter has the right to do whatever he likes with the clay he is moulding so the Lord has the right to pull down nations that fail to live up to the standards He expects and to raise up other nations.
The Lord then tells Jeremiah to go and warn the people of Judah and Jerusalem that they will be destroyed unless they repent.
Application
What we freely acknowledge of others we want to ignore for ourselves. God owns my life by virtue of being the creator,
Therefore He has the right to do what He wishes with my life. If I don't meet His standards then He is justified in throwing me away. He is also allowed to shape my life any way He chooses.
Thankfully, God is not capricious in His ways. He is not cruel, vindictive or even just random. God is motivated by love. Although He would be justified in doing anything, He chooses not to be destructive. We have the assurance of Scripture that in all things God works together for good- even in His processes of judgement.
Prayer
Father you are the potter, I am the clay. Mould me and use me in whatever way you choose. Amen.
