Reflection on Matthew 2:1-12

Scripture
“Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star as it rose and we have come to worship him.”

Observation
Astrologers, scientists, priestly rulers. These men recognised the meaning of the star and decided to seek out its meaning.

They travelled to Jerusalem and enquired of the king, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews?” They were sent to Bethlehem where the star led them. Finding Jesus there they worshipped him and gave him gifts of honour.

God then warned them in a dream not to return to Jerusalem so they went home by another route.

Application
The wise men may or may not be of Jewish descent. They did, however, know when God was at work and they were determined to follow the signs regardless of the costs or consequences.

“Wise men still seek him” says the slogan. We need to make sure that our seeking of Him is also wise- passionate, committed, following where God's light leads us regardless of the price to be paid.

Prayer
Father, for many people, even today, following you will be costly, perhaps even fatal. Please strengthen all who face a high cost for their discipleship. Please help me to have that total commitment to you. Amen.

  1. Wonderful perspective. We always hear about and think about "following Jesus", but you're right, we need to add "wisely".

  2. And wisely means His way not my way, his conditions not my conditions.

  3. Sometimes that's the really hard part! I find I'm tellling God what we should do next, then catch myself and saying, "Sorry - you decide"

  4. We all find it hard to let go of control in some parts of our lives. It's partly human sin but I think our culture drums it into us that we have the right to control our own lives- it's total rubbish of course but we like to think that we can determine every aspect of our life.
