Reflection on Isaiah 60:1-6

Scripture
Arise Jerusalem! Let your light shine for all to see for the glory of the Lord rises to shine on you.

Observation
The glory of the Lord will shine on Jerusalem. Darkness is over the world but Jerusalem shines as a beacon- the glory of the Lord calling the people of the world.

The shekinah glory- the manifest presence of God- will shine forth from Jerusalem.

The people of the nations will come and see this amazing thing. Merchants and rulers will come bearing exotic goods from around the world.

Application
In a sense this passage is a reference to the presence of God in Jesus. Jesus is “God with us”, Emmanuel, the light to the nations.

In another sense it refers to the church- the glory of God incarnated in redeemed human beings carrying the Holy Spirit. We are called to be the light if the world. In Acts, people were both drawn too the grace of God manifested in the disciples and simultaneously afraid of the power they carried.

Finally Jerusalem, along with the whole world, will be re-created, and the New Jerusalem will be a special place for the dwelling of the glory of God.

Prayer
Father, in some way I don't understand, you have chosen me to be a carrier of your glory. Please help me to let your light shine clearly through me in all I do today. Amen.
