Reflection on Mark 9:38-50

Scripture
“If anyone is not against us he is for us.”

Observation
Jesus does not set up “in” and “out” groups. Everyone who is not against Him is for Him.

The key thing to worry about is making sure that I do not establish obstacles to salvation- for myself and for others. Anything that might lead me into sin must be sacrificed for the sake of a much higher value- eternal life.

Application
Christians, especially some pastors, spend so much time measuring up who is saved and who is not. We can be like the Pharisees insisting that people have to meet quite narrow criteria before they are classified as saved.

Jesus' approach seems to be that rather than focusing on whether others are saved, we need to make sure that we make it as easy as possible for others to get into the Kingdom.

Does my lifestyle draw people to Jesus or drive them away?

Does my attitude welcome people or turn them away?

Can people see the life of Jesus in my life?

Prayer
Father let me never become a stumbling block to people who are genuinely seeking your Kingdom. May I point those around me to your never-failing love in all I say and do today. Amen.
