Reflection on Psalm 124

Scripture
Our help is from the Lord who made heaven and earth

Observation
This psalm reminds us that at both the individual and national levels we need to submit to God and recognise our dependence on Him.

“What if the Lord had not been on our side?”

For a nation like Israel- small and defenceless before the might of neighouring powers, this is a reality. The existence of Israel, its survival in a hostile world, depended on God's favour.

If the Lord had not been on their side, Israel would have long ago disappeared from the world,

Application
There are so many times in my life when God's protection was evident. What if the Lord had not been with me?

What about all those times when I have unwittingly stood on the edge of danger?

Our daily lives, our very survival, depend on God's favour.

Australia has been called “The Lucky Country” which is a secularised version of the same thought- we have an abundance of natural resources, we are protected by isolation, we have very stable governments and have rarely been under attack from within or outside.

Prayer
Thank you Lord for your favour and your protection. Glorious, gracious father, you care for us every day and at every level. May our nation learn to praise you for your favour. Amen.
