Reflection on Mark 7:24-37

Scripture
They were completely amazed and said, “Everything he does is good. He even heals people who can't hear or talk.”

Observation
Jesus isn't always what we would call “nice.” Sometimes he is quite abrupt, even rude, and other times He does things that we might consider gross.

But the testimony of the people who saw these things was, “Everything He does is good.”

a woman with a demonised daughter is given a brush off but she persists because her faith and her need are bigger than the insult. Jesus puts spit on a man's tongue and he is healed- no thought of “infection control” procedures here.

Application
we want a god who is safe and fits into our parameters of what God should be. Then we complain because such a god does not deliver the miracles we demand.

Jesus does not allow Himself or the Father to be contained in pretty gold boxes. He gets into the rough and tumble, the gross and the unrespectable because that's the place where human need and divine grace meet.

Jesus presses us at our places of comfort to provoke us to greater faith and higher trust. He takes the risk of offending us to see if we will keep on pushing in to Him, trusting Him to have purpose even when we are offended.

Prayer
Lord sometimes I stand in judgement against you because you refuse to fir into the boxes I want to contain you in. Please help me to let you be God and to see that everything you do is good. Amen
