Reflection on 2 Kings 2:1-12

Scripture
Elijah replied, “I swear by the living Lord and by your own life, that I will stay with you no matter what!” And he went with Elijah to Bethel.

Observation
Despite Elijah's discouragement, Elisha was determined to stay close to Elijah. He wanted Elijah's anointing- he wanted the father's blessing and he wasn't going to be distracted.

Elijah is taken up to heaven and Elisha literally takes up the mantle. He discovers that God has truly given him the double portion (this is the inheritance of the first son) of the spirit of Elijah.

Application
Elisha was single-minded in his determination to inherit the ministry and anointing of Elijah. He stuck to him like glue, refusing to be distracted from his purpose.

Elisha was loyal to a man not an institution. He saw Elijah as a father and loved him faithfully.

To inherit a ministry or anointing we have to love- not just serve- a father in the ministry.

It's not enough to serve an institution. While authority can be conferred by an organisation, spiritual grace and anointing cannot. For this, you need to love a father.

Prayer
Father God, help me to be as faithful as Elijah to the spiritual fathers you place over me/ May I love them faithfully and receive the inheritance you have for me. Amen.
