It's been a long day today. We left at 9.30 am for church at Arise Church. It's a little bigger than New Life so it felt quite comfortable there. David spoke about relational christianity and afterward we prayed and prophesied over people. Then it was off to a Chinese restaurant for a long lunch- made longer by extra crowds due to Mothers Day.
We returned to the place where David is staying probably about 3 pm, where we watched an ice hockey match. Ice hockey (or just hockey to Candaians-- we had to explain that in fact there are other varieties played on different surfaces) isn't a bad spectator sport. I'm usually bored after 5 minutes of any sport but this was mildly interesting. However I just couldn't cope with living with this thing permanently. They have a short home and away season which determine the teams that qualify for the play offs in which each teams are progressively knocked out. But each play off is actaully a mini series in its own right playing the best out of 7 games. So each semi-final, quarter-final etc takes 7 games to deliver a winner.
Eventually Ken and Cheryl turned up with take-aways for dinner which we ate at about 8 or 9. It was still light then and didn't feel late. We arrived home not long before 11.
Tomorrow is another day in the mountains. I must take my coat and my camera.
Trying to picture you watching a game of ice hockey! Matt will be impressed. Watch out or you might get asked to watch the Narrabri Eagles fly on Saturday.
ReplyDeleteIt was reasonably interesting. Each game goes for just one hour- 3 x 20 minute periods. Just at the end of the first period one guy went down having been hit hard by the puck. He didn't get up It turns out that he suffered a ruptured testicle... nasty. Another incident had a guy hit between the eyes with a stick- they had to pause the game to clear up the blood. He played on after getting stitched up. This game is not for the faint hearted
ReplyDeleteKeith, I agree with you on most things, but hockey is my absolute favorite team sport!!
ReplyDeleteNever picked you as a blood sport enthusiast, Lois :)Actually, I think it's a very interesting and exciting sport. I was surprised by the attitude of our hosts. Apparently they would rather cheer on the Chicago team than the Vancouver team. I'm not sure why Calgary people are so anti-Vancouver, but it was an interesting window into Canada culture.
ReplyDeleteMy grandmother and I used to watch "Hockey Night in Canada" on Saturday nights. I was ony about 5 years old and can still remember the sportscaster yelling those exciting words, "HE SHOOTS, HE SCORES!!"
