Unexpected Upgrade to Our Van

The registration on our van was due last Friday.

I went through all the standard procedure- green slip, pink slip and then went to pay the required arm and leg at the RTA web-site. It tells me my vehicle isn't eligible to pay on-line. Thinking there was just a delay in the processing of the green slip payment I left it until this morning.

Same result.

I rang the green slip insurer and they told me that the payment had gone through, so any problem was with the RTA side.

"Oh great" I thought to myself. I normally try to avoid the RTA office this time of the year as there is always a long wait from farmers wanting to register their 50 year old trucks for three months to get them through harvest. An unexpected side benefit of the drought is that there was no queue at the RTA.

I explained what had happened to the lady at the counter (my difficulty registering ion-line I mean, not the drought affecting their customers).

She asked me some interesting questions:

How many seats does it have? 8 the same as it has for the last 17 years. She looked at me as if to say, "Are you sure?"

What kind of fuel does it use? Unleaded.

Do you mean unleaded petrol? Is there any other fuel called unleaded?

So, it doesn't run on hydrogen then? No.

It appears that the RTA had decided our battered old people mover really runs on hydrogen.

They corrected the error so next year I should be able to avoid the RTA office again... unless i follow through on my plan to install a nuclear reactor :)

  1. Well you should know by now James that I'm always one step ahead of you young whipper snappers :)It looks like the RTA must allow them in some form, but possibly subject to a more stringent testing regime- that's just based on my obvioulsy limited experience. I don't know if there are actually any currently on the roads yet.I believe that the biggest problem with using hydrogen is finding a safe, economical and reliable storage method. I've heard of research that is looking at a porous ceramic matrix to trap the hydrogen. But I'm no scientist... I apparently just drive the cars :DUPDATE: according to this 163.189.7.150/publicationsstatisticsforms/downloads/stats_annual_2000.pdfin the year 2000 there were 871 vehicles in NSW using fuel type "Other" which includes CNG, LNG and hydrogen. So obviously they are on the roads.
