Amazing Grace

It was my turn to preach at Night Church last night.

When I sat down to think about what I would say, this question came into my head most unexpectedly:

"Is it possible that God's grace is bigger than we can imagine?"

Then a whole range of ideas started flowing into my head- possibly enough for a whole year of sermons.

Here are some of the almost random thoughts that I had:

  • God's love is vast- far greater than we can imagine
  • We often think that we need to come to God in grief at our sin, but He wants us to come as a friend. Sorrow for sin should follow the revelation of His love, but often we turn it around to make it a prerequisite.
  • Christians often judge one another by performance, clothing or language when it's is God alone who can judge
  • Our default position in respect of God is religion- i.e. the belief that we have to and can earn God's favour
  • Much of what we do in church is based on pragmatism (what "works") rather than on what pleases God
  • The remarkable action of the Amish community a little over a year ago which not only forgave the man who massacred their children at school, they paid for his funeral and offered help and support to his family... that is real christian community!

I may write a book on the subject. I don't know if I'm a writer yet. The subject of the limitless grace of God has grabbed my attention and it may burn sufficiently in my soul that I have to write the text book!

Can I encourage you to just really turn to God and receive His love. You might have been caught up in religious movements, religious attempts to prove to God and yourself that you are OK. You might have felt discouraged by the sense of not being good enough.

God loves you- no strings attached. Take a chance on His love today! You won't be disappointed in Him.

Blessings

Keith
