Reflection on Exodus 20:1-17

Scripture
I am the Lord your God who brought you out Egypt where you were slaves.

Observation
The Ten Commandments are the constitution of a people set free by God from slavery in a strange land.

The commandments were never intended as a legalistic observance- “Do this or burn.” No, they are given as a framework on which we can build a life of gratitude to our redeeming God.

The commandments give us a standard, a direction in which our lives may be lived in friendship with our God.

Application
If I'm honest, I will admit that I break multiple commandments every day. Every day is a failure.

But God is gracious and patient. As I turn back to Him and seek His face, He restores me.

It's not about passing or failing. If we think that way, we reduce faith to legalism and humility gives way to self-righteousness. Rather it's about seeking to walk in fellowship with a Father who loves me.

Prayer
Father I feel like I'm a hypocrite in so many ways. I let you down Lord, because I break your rules every day- if not outwardly then at least in my thoughts and my desires. Thank you for not giving up on me. Thank you for the certainty of your forgiveness when I turn to you. Amen.

  1. It's so sad that this is true of everyone. Good that Jesus is there for us.
