Scripture
Suffering made Jesus perfect, and now he can save forever all who obey him.
Observation
This is one of those really difficult to understand passages- most of us want to just skip to the next chapter and hope it gets easier.
How can the Son of God be made perfect through suffering? Wasn't He already perfect?
The answer to this is that we understand “perfect” imperfectly. Jesus was morally perfect, but that very perfection in some ways made it impossible for Him to be our Saviour.
If the Son of God had been able to be just a role model or a teacher, just a sinless being, it could be argued that He had not really been human, just God In disguise.
The real quality of humanity lies in our suffering. Could Jesus endure all that is common to humanity and still remain sinless? Could He go through physical, emotional, spiritual and mental torment and still remain totally submitted to the Father?
The cross removes all doubt.
Prayer
Thank you Father for the cross. Thank you Jesus for remaining faithful even through unimaginable suffering. Now I see that you have provided the perfect sacrifice than takes away my sin. Amen.
