The people only laughed and insulted the prophets. They ignored what the Lord God was trying to tell them until he finally became so angry that nothing could stop him punishing Judah and Jerusalem.
Observation
The folly of human beings! God's love for His people is so huge that He sends prophets to call them back to Him and to warn of impending disaster. They refuse to hear the warnings- they mock the messenger and ignore the message.
Eventually He sends the pagan king Nebuchadnezzar to bring judgement to the nation.
After seventy years, King Cyrus allows the Jews to return home and it is on this note of hope that 2 Chronicles ends- a new beginning for Judah.
Application
There is a strong warning here that if we ignore the word of God He will send judgement.
God is not quick to condemn us. In fact, He longs for our friendship. When we scorn His love, He will send judgement.
This principle covers every conceivable level of human life- individual, local communities, nations and churches.
We must ever remain open to God's word- both the written word and the spoken prophetic word.
Prayer
Father, give me grace to turn away from my sin before judgement falls. I think you for your patience with me. Please teach me daily from your word, and give me a hunger for your word and for you which overcomes my desire to go my own way. Amen.
