Reflection on Isaiah 50:4-9

Scripture
The Lord God keeps me from being disgraced. So I refuse to give up because I know that God will never let me down.

Observation
This passage is one of several “Servant Songs” in Isaiah. It tells of the Servant's devotion to God's teaching but also of his destiny of suffering.

As we approach Easter, we need to remember that it was a willing action by Jesus to die on the cross. “I let them beat my back and pull my beard. I didn't turn aside when they insulted me and spat in my face.”

There is a song by Michael Card that says “Why did they put nails in your hands? Your love would have held you there.”

Jesus could have called on the angels to rescue him, or flattened the legion of soldiers with a word, but instead he embraced the cross.

Application
It is popular to think that christians should not suffer or even be inconvenienced in any way. We want to be overcomers and victorious always.

But God has not promised us that at all. He gives strength to those who wait on Him.

Sometimes we have to be resolute in the vase of suffering and cling to Jesus who has gone before us.

Prayer
Lord Jesus you did not shrink back from the cross. You accepted gladly the cup of suffering knowing it would bring many people to salvation. Help me to follow in your ways, wherever you take me. Amen.
