Scripture
Even when God is foolish, he is wiser than everyone else, and even when God is weak he is stronger than everyone else.
Observation
How much like today's culture this all sounds. Some people wants signs and wonders to entertain them. Others want a gospel that panders to their own prejudices and presuppositions.
The only thing that God will give us is the one thing we really need- His Son crucified.
To some this is an offence and to others it is stupidity. God is not deterred by our opinion of Him.
In the end, God is higher than all of our ideas about wisdom and power.
Application
How much do I rely on miracles as a validation of my faith? When my prayers are answered in an unexpected way, I sometimes feel very pleased as if it's my ability, my spiritual power that has brought it to pass.
I believe that Jesus' followers do carry spiritual authority- but it is not a measure of my personal holiness or spiritual connection when prayers are answered. It is all God's grace.
Similarly when faith seems to makes sense or be validated by some external event, I can feel special or superior- as if I've had a greater revelation or insight. Again, this is a gift from God not a prize or my personal ability.
I guess I need more of the faith that clings to God for His sake, and not for the signs and revelations that we may find in the world.
Prayer
My Father, you truly are great and mighty. Help me Lord to not look for signs and clever arguments but to look to you alone, always. Amen.
