I went to the opening of Narrabri's first Funeral Home. I was very impressed with the facility there which includes a chapel that seats up to 150 people, a function room, a coffin display room and of course the bits that nobody really wants to know about.
This afternoon's activity was very sad. A couple of weeks ago we had intermittent plumbing problems with the toilet backing up from time to time. The situation got gradually worse so we called our favourite plumber who quickly deduced that we had tree roots in the sewer. What was surprising was the location of the sewer pipes. People who have been around for a while will well remember the infamous trench that had to be dug along the entire length of the building to take waste water from the bathroom at the front of the building to connect to the sewer at the back. We had always assumed that the sewer pipes were all towards the back of the block. But when we investigated, we discovered that the house sewerage goes into the council pipe just near that little garden at the front of the church. The council pipe then goes roughly down the boundary to the back of the land.
Anyway to make a sad story short, the lovely bottlebrush trees which I have lovingly nurtured for several years were the cause of the problem and have now been chopped down. I hate doing it because i love trees, especially natives, but this time there was really no choice.
Here's a photo to remember them from, taken earlier in the year.

Here's a photo I took today at the Funeral Home. It shows the mayor, George Sevil with the owners Tim and Karen Logan.
