Science and Religion

The hypocrisy of scientists is sometimes unbelievable.

There is always a huge uproar when christians try to introduce Bible-based scientific theories such as creation science. "Religion should stay out of science", they say.

But apparently it's OK for science to interfere in religion. ...

I was listening to a podcast today from the ABC's Science Show from a couple of weeks ago. The featured guest was Richard Dawkins, a vocal atheist who has recently published a book called "The God Delusion." Dawkins is an evolutionary biologist who was trying to argue that religion is a bit of a childish thing that rational people have grown out of. He argues that even though religion is an almost universal factor in human beings everywhere, it's more like a side-effect of biological processes. From an evolutionary point of view, you could guess that there is a survival advantage for those human societies that value respecting elders and that this then translates into a readiness to conform to religious ideas and respecting some "imaginary" deity.

Isn't it more likely that humans seem to be hard-wired towards religious views because that's the way reality is? The desire to worship something bigger than we are may in fact be there precisely because there is something bigger than we are.

You don't have to be a rocket scientist to work that out.

It amazes me though that this person is allowed time on a Science program to espouse his religious ideas- dressed up in evolutionary garb, it is basically humanistic atheism mixed in with pseudo-scientific speculation.

It's a sad world that we live in.

Blessings

  1. But apparently it's OK for science to interfere in religion.Richard Dawkins isn't pushing to have preachers read his science papers in their churches. This is a single individual that has the right to freedom of speech and he chose to exercise that right by publishing his views on theological matters. I think that the "you're a scientist so shut your mouth about religion" attitude is quite absurd.Isn't it more likely that humans seem to be hard-wired towards religious views because that's the way reality is? The desire to worship something bigger than we are may in fact be there precisely because there is something bigger than we are.Research has been done to show that there is no "god spot" in the brain. Religions, worship, deities, and so on are all concepts that are gained through the process of learning, for the knowledge of such things is not embedded within us, just as it is not embedded in dogs and cats.

  2. The point is that this was a science programme and Dawkins was not talking about scicence-- it was the usual ignorant and unthinking polemic against religion that Dawkins peddles.
