Christmas- Grace or Religion

Christmas is the ultimate expression of God's grace.

Christmas is the opening scene in a drama that culminates in the crucifixion and redemption of all humanity.

Christmas is the sign that God loves us too much to let our sin determine our destiny. It's the "second chance" on a cosmic scale.

Christmas is about giving- because God first gave to us.

We can't cope with that sort of grace, and so we tame it by making it religious.

We turn the Son of God into a clown with red suit and white beard... and invest him with attendants of elves instead of angels, and a snowman who sits incongruously in 40 degree heat in many yards in the height of Australian summer.

We invest the whole period with religious traditions like "You've got to have ham" or "You can only put the tree up on Christmas Eve" or "We always have dinner at Auntie Mabel's"

Then we cap it all off by turning God's grace back into a religion where reward is determined by behaviour- have you been naughty or nice?

I love this "BC" comic that came out the other day.

Have a Happy Grace-conscious Christmas

Blessings

Keith
