Reflection on Matthew 5:21-37

Scripture
“And if your hand- even your strong hand- causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.”

Observation
Jesus takes the Law which deals with external actions and he applies it to the heart which is the source of the actions.

Murder is not the problem, anger is. Adultery is not the problem, lust is. Vows ar enot the issue but the desire to evade our responsibilities is.

Application
Jesus gives an intensified Law to show us the power of Grace.

The Law can only ever constrain what we do. God's judgement though goes to the heart.

The power of grace is that it first forgives sins and then softens our heart.

I am not just a sinner who has been forgiven. I am a sinner in rehabilitation. I am under reconstruction.

Sin has lost its hold on me because the grace of God has reformed my heart.

Prayer
Thank you Lord for the gospel which not only brings forgiveness, but also brings a new heart enabling me to truly live for you. Amen.
