The big news item last night after the details of the health redistribution (I'm still confused about why simply rearranging the buckets that the same amount of money comes out of is meant to improve health care or stop the blame game, but then I'm not a politician) was the trial of ethics classes in NSW schools as an alternative to Scripture classes.
Some church leaders are worried that this might see a reduction or even a total ending to "Special Religious Education". I don't think so. I don't think that the secularists and atheists will be able to mount an army of volunteers to match the thousands of Scripture teachers who turn out each week to share the Good News in our schools.
I was particularly interested to see that the Minister for Education, Verity Firth, in promoting the ethics classes, said that she was raised to believe that "white lies" were morally OK.
And that is the biggest reason that churches have nothing to fear about "ethics" classes taking the place of SRE. When you take away the God factor (the moral law giver) then there is no basis for any coherent ethical system. That is why most non-christians send their kids to SRE and some even spend hard-earned dollars to send them to Christian schools. They know we have a higher ethic, a better standard, a coherent world view.
And most christians will tell you that there are no white lies, but even the truth must be told in love... there is no higher ethic than that.
They know we have a higher ethic, a better standard, a coherent world view.-quote I would really like to go to church, but this sort of elitist self righteous attitude prevents me(sorry for being so blunt) A coherent world view? I would strongly dis agree. Is it really that inconcievable that non christians could have strong ethics? I belive the reason the Fedral Govt. is taking over the health system is because, the hospitals are falling apart through mis managment, by state govts., they simply are going broke. Mis managment, a bit like the church really... but i wont go there.. peace.. just the view of an insignifigant heathen.
ReplyDeleteI think that by and large Christians have a higher ethic than that expressed by Verity Firth-- there is no such thing as a white lie.-quote Politics is basiclly about diplomatic truth bending, i would trust her either! It's not self-righteous point out that many parents are motivated to spend their cash on christian schools despite not being christians themselves- that's just pointing out that a substantial group of people recognise there is a higher ethic that can be aspired to,-quote They are cheaper than private schools and a bit better than public, thats why people i know went to them, not really to do with a higher ethics or morals. Its not really pointing any thing out.(but it is self righteous!)The problem with the health system isn't so much mismanagement as lack of funding.-quote Doctors and nurses say they need money now, sure, but the reason for this and i have heard doctors say this, is the way it has been run for the past 10 or so years.

The problem with the health system isn't so much mismanagement as lack of funding. Rudd's promise was to "end the blame game" and get the hospitals working properly- but his initial plan didn't mean more money for hospitals, and in fact all of the extra money that the states have got out of him will just get swallowed up in the cost of trasnitioning to the new system.
