Reflection on Revelation 7:9-17

Scripture
“Salvation comes from our God who sits on the throne and from the Lamb.”

Observation
Worship in heaven is very noisy and very emotive.

A large crowd from every nation, tribe and people stand before the throne waving palm branches and “shouting with a great roar.”

The elders and angels gather around the throne and worship.

Then there are the martyrs who are honoured for remaining steadfast in their faith.

Each group worships God in their own way.

Application
In John's vision heavenly worship has little to do with harps and quiet meditation. John describes worship that proclaims God's mighty acts. It is noisy, celebratory and joyful- in some ways more like a rock concert than a church service. At the focus of it all there is no mere human idolatry, but rather true worship of our God and our Saviour.

Of course heavenly worship is not just noise for the sake of noise. This is heart-felt worship- transformed people giving voice to their gratitude for redemption and their love for the God who first loved us.

Prayer
Lord I am so excited about the prospect of worshipping you in heaven. Help me to practise here on earth, always giving honour and glory to you my Redeemer and my Lord. Amen.
