Scripture
“I am the bread that gives life. No one who comes to me will ever be hungry. No one who has faith in me will be thirsty.”
Observation
Jesus is the bread of heaven. People grumbled because they saw his humanity- they knew him and his family. They were offended at his claims.
He repeated his claim that the way to eternity is to feast on Him. This increased theier offence and proved the point of his claim that the only way we can come to Him is if the Fathers makes the way.
Application
Sometimes it appears that Jesus goes out of His way to offend people. Not only do the followers have to follow the way of Jesus, they have to “eat His flesh.” It's as if Jesus is daring them to reject Him.
I always need to remember that I come to Jesus on his terms, not my own. To follow Jesus is to die to myself and that means He, not I, sets the parameters for my following.
This means I have to let go of my own desire to determine my path, my life-goals, my plans. It also means there is no room for comparing my calling with anyone else's.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, you are the Bread of Life. Thank you for the gift of eternal life. Help me to follow you, even when I don't like the path you take me on. Amen.
