Scripture
David started trembling. Then he went up to the room above the city gate to cry. As he went, he kept saying, “My son Absalom! My son Absalom!” I wish I could have died instead of you.”
Observation
David's son Absalom had rebelled against David. Despite orders to the contrary, when Joab saw Absalom trapped in a tree, he killed him.
The messengers thought they were bringing good news to David, but he was devastated by the death of his son, even though he had rebelled against his reign.
Application
David was king over a kingdom, but he was also a father. It is clear that many of his associates, and probably even Absalom himself, did not understand this.
Many people carry wounded hearts, often called the orphan heart. They interpret all of their experiences through a filter of hurt and rejection. This makes it difficult for them to receive and give love, and very difficult to submit to proper authority. They react against anyone who reminds them of their father.
This makes it impossible to live a truly christian life.
Prayer
Father, reveal to me what is really in my heart. Do I truly have an orphan heart? Or am I genuinely open to your love and the love of those around me? Please heal anything in me that is wounded. Amen.
