It's almost exactly one year ago that I flew into Yangon (Rangoon), the beautiful capital of Myanmar (Burma), with Michael Appleton.
Together we taught some students, together with their teacher Dr Ram, about the ministry of apostles. Dr Ram is a young man with the awesome vision of training hundreds of church planters to send to every part of Myanmar.
As I've been watching the news reports coming out of Myanmar it's clear that these are dangerous times. It is chilling to see some of the streets that were near the hotel where we stayed. Last year, it was peaceful there- at least in the sense that there was no overt violence. We were aware of oppression and the total lack of freedom there, but the city was very tranquil.
At the moment it is Buddhists who seem to be confronting the military regime, but the military have always seen christians as a threat to their rule.
Please pray for the peaceful resolution of this conflict, and the institution of real democracy there.
Pray also for the gentle, humble men of God such as Dr Ram and the people at the Gospel For Asia training college just out of Yangon.
Pray for the Christian people in more remote areas also- particularly the Karen people (near the border with Thailand) and the Chin people (north-western corner of Myanmar, near the border with India). Both of these people groups are overwhelmingly christian and have suffered greatly at various times at the hands of the military government.
Pray for God's purposes to prevail in this nation.
Blessings
Keith
