Reflection on Amos 8:1-12

Scripture
“The time is surely coming,” says the Sovereign Lord, “when I will send a famine on the land- not a famine of bread or water but of hearing the words of the Lord.”

Observation
The Lord shows Amos another vision, this time of a basket of ripe fruit. The Lord declares that the people of Israel are ripe for judgement.

The people are desperate for the Sabbath to be open so that they can get on with the business of ripping off the poor.

Consequently the day of punishment will surely come. This will be a punishment like no other for it will be a famine of hearing the voice of the Lord.

Application
I can think of nothing more awful than to experience a famine of hearing the word of God.

Imagine being lost in sin but unable to hear or understand the words that would set you free. It would be like getting trapped in a dangerous situation in a country where you don't understand the language and so cannot hear the words which could rescue you and save your life.

Many people in our own nation are like that. I think that our population has so rejected the gospel over the last few decades that they are now unable to hear it any more.

It's not because christians lack the ability to speak words of faith. It is rather that people cannot hear or process the words.

The only solution is to pray that this curse be lifted off people's hearts and that they are able to turn back to the Lord.

Prayer
Father please life this judgement off our land. Make it possible for people to be able to hear the words of salvation and to discern the voice of truth. Amen.
