Scripture
“I will test my people with this plumb line. I will no longer ignore all their sins.”
Observation
The Lord shows Amos a vision of a plumb line against a wall. The Lord uses the plumb line to determine if the wall is still straight. Then comes this chilling message: “I will no longer ignore their sins.”
Amaziah the priest at Bethel sends a message to Jeroboam that Amos is trying to overthrow Jeroboam by prophesying against him.
Amaziah orders Amos to stop prophesying against Israel, but Amos responds with even more specific prophecies regarding the Lord's judgement against Israel- prophecy which later comes true.
Application
The Lord does not tolerate sin indefinitely. A time of judgement is inevitable.
People do not like this message. We want to think that we can do what we like without any bad consequences.
God is not mocked! He will demand an accounting.
It is far better to respond to Him be repenting than to just cover our ears and pretend that He's not there.
Prayer
Lord, let my heart be pure before you. I confess that I am not perfect. I ask that you will enable me to let go of my sins and to walk in your ways. Amen.
Amen!
