Reflection on John 6:51-58

Scripture
“Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life and I will raise him up at the last day.”

Observation
Jesus continues talking about eternal life in terms of eating Him. Eternal life comes through “feasting” on the blood and flesh of Jesus. When we do this, He abides in us and guarantees us eternal life.

The Jews interpret this literally but it's clear that something more metaphorical is being spoken of.

Jesus is the Passover Lamb, the one who is sacrificed to bring us life. Just as in the original Passover the Lamb must be eaten by the family. Jesus dies to take the penalty of sin, but to make this work effectively, our lives have to become one with His life. He becomes incarnated in us as we take His life into our lives.

Application
More of Jesus every day, and less of me. This is the path of life. I must hand over more and more to Him, devote more of my life to seeking His ways, spend more of myself in worshipping Him.

He must increase and I must decrease.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, please help me to truly become dedicated to living out your life in my life. Help me to surrender all of me to you.
