Scripture
“Give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong.”
Observation
Solomon ascends to the throne following David's death, The Lord appears to Solomon in a dream and promises him anything he asks for.
Solomon, in a moment of brilliance, asks for wisdom to rule the country and discernment to judge between people. This pleases the Lord because he asked for something that advances his mission not something selfish.
The Lord promises to give Solomon the wisdom he requested and also the wealth and honour he did not request.
Application
Often our prayers are dominated by our selfish concerns- work and family issues etc. While God delights to answer these prayers, He really loves it when we ask for the resources that we need for the mission He has set for us.
If we seek His kingdom and set our hearts on His goals, then all of these other things will be given to us also.
Prayer
Father, I confess that too often my prayers are very limited. Help me to look to you to provide the way forward in the calling you have for me. Give me the wisdom of Solomon that I might always pray wisely. Amen.
