Scripture
“Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own.”
Observation
A call from a man to judge between him and his brother prompts Jesus to tell a parable against greed.
A rich man has a bumper crop. He is pleased with his efforts and plans his retirement.
But God's judgement is that he will die a fool that night because he has invested his life in his wealth but paid no heed to his eternal destination.
Application
Many people are like this. They may be christians- ticked the salvation box- but their focus is still on earthly things.
The way of wisdom is the way of salvation- spending our earthly life investing in eternal purposes.
How do we do this?
1. Personal spiritual growth. Daily time with God is essential. Reading scripture, prayer, worship.
2. Involvement in a faith community. We cannot grow deeply in the ways of the Lord in isolation. Worshipping, sharing and praying with other christians forces us to grow our roots more deeply in Christ, especially as we work through relational issues together.
3. Serving others in the community around us.
Prayer
Lord, strip away from me every form of greed and dependence on possessions. Help me to put my trust entirely on you. Amen.
