David knew that the Lord has made him king of Israel and that he had made him a powerful ruler for the sake of his people.
Observation
The leaders of Israel ask David to be their king and acknowledge that it is the Lord who has brought him to this destiny.
They anoint him with oil as a symbol of the presence of the Holy Spirit in him.
David captures Jerusalem and establishes it as the capital of his kingdom. This fact is often ignored in contemporary political discussions- the Jews go backa very long way in Israel and in Jerusalem in particular.
The passage ends with David acknowledging that this is all God's doing.
Application
Leaders, worldly and spiritual, are there to glorify God and to build up their people. Ministry, leadership, influence- it's all for the sake of others and always at the grace of God.
When leaders turn their position to meeting selfish goals then it becomes control, manipulation and dangerous.
Real leadership only happens through the anointing of the Holy Spirit- whether the leader is aware of this or not.
For me as a christian leader, the presence of God is absolutely essential. I cannot lead people in the ways of the Lord if I am not walking in them myself. I need a fresh anointing every day.
Prayer
Come Holy Spirit. Come and fill me again. Refresh me every day with your presence, your power, your grace. May I always carry the attitude of a servant- to glorify you and to bless the people I lead. Amen.
Amen!
