Reflection on 1 Peter 3:18-22

Scripture

Christ is now in heaven where he sits at the right side of God. All angels, authorities and powers are under his control.

Observation

The answer to the perennial question “What happens ot those people who have never had a chance to hear the gospel” is given here. The anwer is: God is in control of it all!

Jesus went to the spirits in prison to tell them the Good News. Presumably there was an opportunity to repent and escape the judgment.

Noah's flood salvation was like the salvation symbolised by baptism. Just as Noah and his family passed through the waters of judgement, we also in the water of our baptism also escape judgment.

Application

Christ is in control of all the powers and all the authorities. We don't have to be afraid of satan's dominions. The worst demons in the world are subject to Christ. We hav enothing to fear for Jesus has destroyed satan's power. We need to walk in the certainty and assurance of this fact.

Prayer

Thank you Jesus that nothing can separate me from your love. Help me to be constantly aware of this. Amen.

  1. I'm always overwhelmed when I think of how Jesus is more powerful than the worst evil.

  2. Yes Lois. And that power comes from refusing to use power in an evil way but in fact to seem to allow evil to "win" while subverting it along the way. That's probably not very clear but I know what I mean!
